Holy Roman Empire: Ferdinand I (1503-1564), silver 6 kreuzer klippe (3.29g), Vienna (in Austria) mint, 1529 CE. Issued during the Ottoman Siege of Vienna. Legend "TVRCK BLEGERT WIEN 1529" (Turks laid siege on Vienna 1529), surrounded by floral ornaments / Cross pattŽe; in each quarter lies a coat-of-arms belonging to Niederšsterreich, Castile, Hungary, and Bohemia. Schulten-4214. Very fine to extremely fine. Historically important coin and an impressive grade for this type. In 1529 and after the successful military campaign against Hungary in the Battle of Mohacs, Sulayman the Magnificent marched with 125,000 troops to the city of Vienna and laid siege on it. The siege lasted around 18 days only but ultimately failed to capture the city. This was the first of two failed attempts by the Ottomans to capture the city. This siege also marks the farthest extent of Ottoman expansion into Europe. This historically important coin type was minted very briefly during the siege, which lasted a little over 2 weeks.
