In 1857, Marshal Randon secured a decisive victory in northern Algeria over remaining rebel forces that continued resisting even after the surrender of their leader, the famous 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri. In the aftermath, the Governor-General of Algeria commissioned a series of medals bearing Arabic inscriptions, which were distributed among the local population. This piece is a well-preserved, high-grade example from that series. Similar in style to the preceding Ottoman coinage of Jaza'ir (Algeria). PCGS SP64 BN.
