Part of Qur'an 42:23 in inner obverse margin "qul la as'alukum 'alayhi ajran illa'l mawaddata fi'l qurba" (Say, [O Prophet], I do not ask you for a reward for this [message], only honour for [our] kinship). This coin was minted during a turbulent period marked by multiple rebellions against the Umayyads, including uprisings by the Abbasids and the Kharijites in conflicts that ultimately contributed to the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate and the rise of the Abbasids. This particular dirham was issued by supporters of the Alid leader 'Abd Allah ibn Mu'awiya, who launched a revolt against the Umayyads in al-Kufa and Persia. Ibn Mu'awiya was ultimately defeated by a force dispatched by the Umayyad ruler Marwan II. Although he managed to escape to Khurasan, he was eventually executed by the Abbasid revolutionary Abu Muslim.
